Fatal occupational injuries in 2013

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has put together a full list of the fatal occupational injuries from 2013 (the most recent year for which a full data set is available), both those suffered in Illinois and those from around the rest of the United States. On the whole, there were 4,405 such incidents during the year. Of note is the fact that this is lower than the number for 2012, which came in at 4,628. This means that the rate for 2013 was 3.2 for every 100,000 full time workers, which is a drop from 2012's 3.4 for every 100,000 full time workers.

Illinois family of fatal truck accident victim awarded $8 million

When a person is struck by a large commercial vehicle, there may be much more at stake than if a person is in an accident with another passenger vehicle. In terms of damage, a tractor trailer is much more powerful and heavy than a regular vehicle and can cause catastrophic levels of damage in a crash. Property damage, serious injuries and fatalities are often the consequence of a serious truck accident.

Chicago man charged after fatal car accident on I-80

People who live in Chicago know how congested the streets and highways can get. From traffic jams to construction work, busy road conditions can be a source of frustration and anxiety. However, even when the roads are clear and there are not many other cars around, it is still very possible to get into a serious car accident.

Illinois DUI Offender in Fatal Accident Given Unusual Sentence

Last summer, a man from East Peoria ran into a motorcycle with his car, killing the rider of the motorcycle. The driver of the car was found to have marijuana in his system at the time of the accident. A judge recently sentenced the man to four years probation for the incident. The driver will have to serve 180 days in jail after completing an intense private drug treatment program that lasts for one year. The judge explained his decision by citing the driver's diagnosis for hypoglycemia, which may have played a role in the reason why the man lost control of his car and crashed into the motorcyclist. The driver's defense attorney argued that his client had low blood sugar, leading to an apparent blackout.

Recent Deaths Put Focus on Chicago Bike Safety

Chicago has been hit by a spate of deadly bicycle accidents in recent weeks. Late last month, an 11-year-old boy was struck while riding his bicycle within a block of his Northwest Chicago home. He died June 25, 2012, five days after the accident. On July 4, an 81-year-old man was killed after he crashed his bike into an SUV.Chicago drivers have a duty to share the road with cyclists. Drivers can help prevent bicycle accidents by making a point to be on the lookout for cyclists and yielding to them when appropriate.

Motorcycle Crash Fatality Rates Still Too High

In recent years, motor vehicle accident death rates have been declining steadily. Unfortunately, this trend has not carried forward to motorcycle accidents. A recent study by the Governor's Highway Safety Association showed that motorcycle accident fatality rates stayed relatively flat between 2010 and 2011.
