Know what to do if you are struck by a car on your bicycle

The Chicago area is full of beautiful bike trails for enthusiasts. Regardless of where you are riding around the city, you know that safety has to be a priority. It is imperative that you take your time, and you hope that drivers will do the same.

When you have to ride around vehicles, you will need to ensure that you are following the proper laws so that you do not inadvertently put yourself in danger. You should expect that drivers will do the same. Unfortunately, they might not, and you could be the one who suffers because of it. You should have a plan in mind in the event that a vehicle slams into you while you are riding.

Take stock of the situation

You will most likely suffer injuries if a car hits you. As a result, you should give yourself a quick check to determine what steps you need to take. At a minimum, the police need to be called so they can come out and get a report written. If you have obvious injuries, ask for a paramedic to be sent to the scene.

If possible, try to move somewhere safe. You don't need to be struck by another vehicle because you are in a traffic lane. Of course, this might not be possible if you have extensive injuries. It is a good idea to leave your bicycle where it landed so that the officer can see the location. This may prove useful in trying to determine what happened.

Document everything

Gathering photos of the scene, contact information from the driver and any witnesses may be beneficial to you. If you have to move the bicycle, grab the pictures before you move it. You can show the pictures to the officer, and they may need a copy of the photographs to go with the report.

If you are severely injured and cannot collect the documentation, you may have to rely on the report from the officer. This is not ideal, but your attorney may be able to help you gather evidence if you opt to pursue a claim for compensation.

When you are seeking compensation, you are working to hold the accountable parties liable for the financial damages that you suffered. This does not stop with only your medical bills. It also extends to any wages you did not earn due to injury as well as other impacts of the incident. Working closely with your attorney can help you determine what to include in your case.
