What are the causes of food poisoning?

Almost everyone has experienced food poisoning at some point in their lives. While mild forms of food poisoning are unpleasant, it is usually nothing to worry about as long as you make sure to stay hydrated when experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. However, some types of food poisoning can be extremely severe. In some cases, those suffering from food poisoning can face hospitalization and may even be at risk of losing their life.

If you have recently suffered food poisoning, you have likely tried to pinpoint the food that caused your sickness. If you strongly believe that the food you were served at a restaurant caused the food poisoning, you may even wonder if you should take legal action.

This can be possible in some cases, but you need to be able to provide proof. If several people who dined at the restaurant that day became ill, you may be able to make a claim. It is also important that you know the primary causes of food poisoning. The following are some of the most common reasons why food poisoning occurs.

Undercooked meat and dairy

Meat and dairy can carry many different types of bacteria, from E. Coli. to salmonella. Cooking meat and dairy thoroughly can ensure that any bacteria in the food is killed. Being served undercooked or unpasteurized meat or dairy in restaurants could be the cause of your illness.

Food is handled by someone with unwashed hands

Chefs and servers must exercise high hygiene standards when dealing with food, and they should not work if they are sick. One virus that is commonly transferred through food is Norovirus. It is often spread when a sick person prepares food without washing their hands.

Food is not stored correctly

Most food should be kept frozen or chilled before cooking. This helps to slow the growth of harmful bacteria. If food is left out at room temperature for too long, is not covered or is contaminated with other food, it can cause food poisoning when consumed.

If you have recently suffered food poisoning and you believe that this was caused by the negligence of a food establishment, you may be able to take legal action. If successful, you will be able to receive damages for the pain and suffering caused.
