How can I prevent collisions involving cyclists?

Drivers of cars are one of the safest parties on the road. The latest technology allows for modern cars to have many different types of collision protection that can prevent serious injuries. Cyclists, however, do not have the same level of protection — there is nothing separating them from the car in the event of a collision.

Therefore, as a car driver, it is likely that you want to understand how you can exercise your responsibility to keep cyclists as safe as possible. No one wants to be involved in a collision that seriously injures another person. While you can never prevent the negligent actions of a cyclist, there are some things that you can do to make your actions on the road as safe as possible.

Slow down when approaching intersections

One of the most potentially dangerous parts of the road for cyclists and drivers alike is intersections. It is typically more difficult to notice an oncoming cyclist, so it is important that you slow down and consciously check for cyclists approaching.

Keep a safe distance

If you're driving behind a cyclist, make sure that you are keeping a safe distance from them. Cyclists can stop abruptly, and if they do so you may struggle to avoid colliding with them unless you maximize the space between you and them.

Use headlights when appropriate

Cyclists can be difficult to spot in the dark. That's why the appropriate use of headlights is important. At the very least, cyclists should have reflective gear on their bikes which will allow you to see them from a distance with the use of your headlights, even on extremely dark roads.

Pass safely

Passing a cyclist can be risky if not done responsibly. Make sure that you do not pass at the peak of a hill, and that you are certain that there's no oncoming traffic. Allow more than enough space between you and the cyclist when passing them. This can help them to feel more secure and will vastly reduce the chance of a collision.

If you have recently been involved in a collision with a cyclist, you may be wondering whether the cyclist can be held accountable due to their negligent actions. It's possible for either or both parties to be found negligent depending on the exact circumstances of the incident.
