Only 2 cities have worse traffic than Chicago

Whether you're walking, driving or riding your bike, you feel like the Chicago traffic just works against you constantly. At rush hour, far too many cars pack the streets, leading to traffic jams and road rage. When tourists come to town, they cause havoc trying to find their way. You also see far too many distracted, reckless and aggressive drivers -- three types of drivers who tend to cause a lot of car accidents.

Is it just you, or does everyone feel this way? Is the traffic really that bad?

It is. One report ranked it as the third-worst in the entire country. Only two cities had worse traffic: Boston and Washington D.C. To make matters worse, the problem -- though it has always existed -- is getting more noticeable with each study. The previous one still put Chicago in the top 10, but it was fifth overall. Now it's third. Will it ever surpass Boston and D.C. to take over that top spot? That remains to be seen.

The qualifications

One qualifier for this report is that it looked specifically at traffic congestion. The heavy traffic led to an incredible amount of wasted time: 138 hours, on average, over the course of the year. Drivers sat in traffic jams, sat at red lights and waited at stop signs. Even when they could drive, they had to proceed slowly because of how many cars they found around them.

Naturally, it was worse for some drivers than others. Though night driving statistically tends to be more dangerous, for instance, it also sees far lower traffic volumes. Those working shifts that required them to commute at night, rather than during rush hour, likely wasted far less time in traffic. Of course, this just brought the average down, meaning that a lot of drivers wasted far over that 138-hour mark.

The economy

One interesting thing that the study noted was that the traffic levels have gotten worse in recent years, as the economy has rebounded. For all of the benefits of having a stronger economy, one of the major downsides is that people travel more for work, for leisure, to go shopping and for many other reasons. Combine that with fairly good gas prices and traffic level surge. The roads can't handle them, and that leads to both traffic congestion and accident risks.

Your legal options after a crash

Have you gotten injured in a crash while trying to navigate this heavy traffic on your bike or in your car? Maybe you got hit as a pedestrian, just trying to cross the street. No matter what happened, if you suffered serious injuries, you need to know what legal options you have.
