Strava shows that people ride bikes more than they run

Certainly, many athletes enjoy both running and cycling. There is a reason that triathlons are so popular all over the world. Even people who do not compete often like to use both activities to mix things up and work on different muscle groups.

That said, you definitely have a lot of enthusiasts who pick one or the other. They log hundreds or even thousands of miles cycling or pounding the pavement. They join races, they go out with friends, and they work out on their own. But which one is more popular?

The data

The data presented below comes from Strava, which is an exercise tracking app that people use to documents their workouts. It is one of the most popular apps in the world, but it still only takes into account a fraction of the population. Many people run and bike without Strava and many do it without any way to document their miles at all. They either do not care to do so or they keep track on their own.

So, while the information can help paint a picture of what professional and amateur athletes prefer, it simply cannot include anyone. Take that into account when studying the numbers.

That said, Strava found that people certainly ride bikes more than they run. Men added 382 million uploads and women added another 50 million, for a total of 432 million cycling uploads. For running, men saved 234 million uploads and women added another 90 million, for a total of 324 million uploads. That's more than 100 million fewer running uploads overall.

That trend held true with group activities, as well. A full 73.1% of people on Strava did virtual group rides together. At the same time, 63.1% of people did real-life rides. Barely less than half of app users did group runs together, at 49.9%. That actually clocked in under Nordic skiing, which had 51.9%.

Of course, this could just indicate that people like to ride bikes together more often, while most runners prefer to go out on their own, and there is something to be said for that mentality. However, as the statistics above illustrate, there are simply more people overall logging rides as opposed to runs, even if those are the two most common activities on the app.

Cycling safety

If cycling is one of the most popular ways to get exercise in the United States, one has to start to consider safety. Many of those miles got logged on roads where cyclists had to ride around cars, trucks and commercial vehicles. Every time they go out, in a group or alone, there is a risk of injury.

If you do get injured in an accident on your bike, be sure you know what legal steps you can take.
