Biking safety: Riding for health while staying safe

Riding a bike is a great way to get exercise and to get where you want to go without using fossil fuels. The problem is that bikes are not extremely common in America. This means the drivers are not accustomed to seeing them on the roads.

Some of the people most at risk for bike accidents include children and older adults who are at a higher risk of serious injury if involved in a crash. Children are more likely to make mistakes that result in ending up in dangerous conditions.

How can you bike safely?

It is a good idea for people to ride in pairs or groups. This helps make the cyclists more visible on the roadways. It is also wise to use the lights and bells on bikes regardless of the time of day when they will be used.

How can you prevent injury in the case of an accident?

Wear a properly fitted helmet, which should not have taken a blow in the past. Once a helmet has absorbed shock, it is no longer suitable for further use. Make sure to replace your helmet if you crash and hit your head. The helmet should fit securely and not move around the head while you ride. Additionally, you should wear the chin strap to keep it in place.

Another good tip is to ride as far to the right as possible on the roadway or to use a bike lane. Children usually can ride on sidewalks, but adults should check local regulations to make sure it is legal.

Another great idea is to wear bright colors. Purchase a brightly colored vest or wear reflective clothing to make sure that lights bounce off you in the evening and early morning. This simple reflection could be the difference between a driver seeing you or not noticing you in the low-light conditions.

Biking is sometimes dangerous, and there's not always something you can do about it. However, if you protect yourself, you'll be in a better condition to handle a crash. Wearing clothing that reflects and covers your skin and body, wearing a helmet and being aware of your surroundings can all be of help when you're around vehicles and at risk of being involved in a crash. Prevention is one of the only steps people can take to avoid getting hurt as a result of others.
