What should I do immediately after a bicycle crash with a car?

Bicyclists can do a lot to stay safe and avoid accidents with automobiles on the road. However, at a certain point, there is a limit to what a bicyclist can do to prevent a crash. Motorists are often distracted, looking at their cellphones, speeding or breaking the rules of the road. Sometimes, car drivers create dangerous situations for bicyclists on purpose by intimidating bicyclists and even trying to run them off the road.

If you were involved in any kind of bicycle versus car collision, no matter the circumstances, keep reading. The following advice is for you.

Here's how to handle yourself after a bike versus car collision

Bicyclists need to be careful to handle themselves in a calm and orderly fashion after a car crash. You could be fuming and angry because you know the accident wasn't your fault, but you're best served to stay as peaceful and calm as possible.

Here is some additional advice for bicyclists hit by cars:

Get the medical care you need -- If you or someone else involved in the accident is in bad shape, your first order of business should be to call 911 or call an ambulance. Nothing matters more than your health and safety at this point.

Move your bicycle away from the road -- You'd be surprised how many people get hurt or killed after an auto accident because they stayed on the side of the road or in the road where passing vehicles can strike them. It's best to move yourself and your bicycle as far away from traffic as possible. Encourage the motor vehicle driver to do the same.

Call the police -- If you are injured or if your bike is damaged, be sure to call the police. The police will ask you the details of the accident, create a formal record of the accident,  and make sure everyone is alright.

Stay non-confrontational -- Don't tell the motorist the accident was his or her fault, even if you know it was. Wait until the police arrive and give the police your side of the story. For one, you don't want the motorist to run away. Secondly, you don't want to get involved in any kind of a physical altercation.

Get contact information for the other driver and any witnesses -- Collect information relating to the other driver's vehicle registration, phone number, email, license plate number and so forth. Also, collect contact information for witnesses who saw the accident happen.

Look your bike over for damage -- Before trying to ride your bike, be sure to check it for damage. You don't want to get on a damaged bike that could result in an even worse accident further down the road.

Were you hurt by a negligent motorist while riding your bike?

Bike accident victims who were injured by negligent or unlawful motorists may need to take action to protect their right to recover financial compensation relating to their injuries. If you were involved in a bike crash, make sure you fully understand the law that applies to your situation as well as your legal rights and options.

An experienced personal injury attorney can review your situation and discuss your legal options.
