Key facts about distracted driving

Distracted driving causes accidents every day, especially involving young drivers. However, many people still do not realize just how big this issue can be in Illinois, so it's important to look at some of the key facts and statistics.

First of all, take a look at just how many of these tragic accidents end up being fatal. The results from 2013 show that a full 3,154 people passed away in these crashes. That is trending downward, as it was 6.7 percent higher the year before, but it is still a significant number.

Injuries, though, have shown to be on the rise. In 2012, around 421,000 people were hurt. That jumped up to approximately 424,000 people the following year, in 2013.

One of the biggest reasons for distracted driving is cellphone use, especially texting. When texting, drivers will look away from the road, perhaps trying to drive with their peripheral vision alone or perhaps not even looking at the road at all. A staggering total of 153.3 billion texts are sent each and every month, in the United States and its territories, many of them from cars.

It was noted above that young people are often in these accidents, and the statistics hold true. About 10 percent of all drivers who are 19 and under and involved in deadly accidents were distracted when they crashed. No other age group that was studied had such a high percentage. This takes into account all different types of distractions.

When a negligent driver injures you or a family member in Illinois, you need to look into every legal option.
