Summer Is High Season For Car Accidents

Getting behind the wheel always involves an element of risk. That risk may be at its greatest in the month of July. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, July saw the most fatal traffic accidents of any month from 2005 to 2011. July was the most deadly month in the season in which most fatal car accidents occur, from July through September. These three months saw 27 percent of the fatal car accidents that occurred during those years. While that is not wildly disproportional to other months, it does demonstrate that a rise in motor vehicle fatalities may coincide with the months in which teen drivers spend more time on the roads.

A recent study conducted by Driving-Tests.org analyzed common causes of teen car crashes. The study confirmed an earlier finding that drinking and driving is no longer the number one threat to teen drivers. Driver inattention and other lapses in basic driving skills were the cause of more than three-quarters of all teen-driver crashes. Those lapses include failing to obey traffic signs and signals, failure to scan the road to detect hazards and speeding.

The summer months give teens more time and freedom to get behind the wheel. Summer jobs may put teens in commuter traffic for the first time in their lives. Inexperienced drivers are naturally more likely to make mistakes that can turn fatal in the wrong situation. It is important for parents and guardians to make every effort to prepare their children for the realities of driving. Avoiding distraction and recognizing the importance of safe driving practices can save a teen's life and the lives of those sharing the road with new drivers.
