Thinking about renting a party bus? You might want to think again

Party buses seem like fun, and many Illinois residents will rent one for a special event. What could be better than to have your friends together for a moving party that goes wherever you want? It seems like a great idea on the surface, but party buses can also be extremely dangerous.

Unfortunately, the family of a 27-year-old man recently found out the hard way just how dangerous party buses can be.

27-year-old killed in party bus catastrophe

A 27-year-old man was a festive passenger on a 32-seat Freightliner party limo. He got up to change something on the radio when he lost his balance and fell against the party bus doors. Before anyone knew what happened, the man fell out of the bus and onto the pavement below. A police sergeant familiar with the incident described it as a "freak accident."

The man struggled to stand up in the street when another vehicle hit him, delivering catastrophic injuries. Tragically he didn't survive.

The man's mother said that her son was on the party bus to celebrate the birthday of a friend he'd met at work. She said that he had left his car in a public parking lot where he planned to leave it so he wouldn't drive drunk. About the tragic accident, the mother said, "I don't know how a door on a bus opens when you're in transit, that's not right. It shouldn't happen that way."

At this time, authorities don't know if a mechanical failure caused the bus door to open, or if the door was properly functioning.

It was a passing black SUV that hit the man after he fell into the street. The SUV didn't stop, but continued down the road. Investigators are trying to find to identify the driver of the SUV.

Be alert to dangers no matter where you are

Innocently fun events can lead to disaster, especially when alcohol is involved. If you're having fun with friends at a party, it's important to take note of possible dangers around you. For example, you might notice a broken staircase that the owner failed to fix, a cracked sidewalk someone could trip over, or even a loose door on a party bus. Although the owners of the faulty property, or the owner of the party bus in this case, might be financially liable for injuries and deaths, a keen eye for details could prevent a fatal accident from happening in the first place.
