Nursing Home Abuse

Protect Your Loved Ones against Mistreatment

You choose a nursing home for your parent or grandparent in order for them to receive the care that they are unable to give themselves. Unfortunately, nursing home staff can abuse this trust and victimize vulnerable adults. It is a tragic situation when a nursing home changes from a place of sanctuary to a place of a crime and abuse.

If you suspect nursing home staff are abusing your family member, contact the law offices of Joseph Klest. We represent families throughout the Chicago area whose loved ones have been victims of nursing home abuse.

People would never expect that the facility they chose for a family member's care would ultimately cause more serious pain and suffering. It is almost unimaginable to consider a person entrusted with the care of some of the most vulnerable adults would prey on their weaknesses.

Some common forms of nursing home abuse include:

  • Mental abuse, including fear, intimidation, verbal harassment, forced isolation, and neglect
  • Physical abuse, including bedsores (trophic ulcers, pressure sores, decubitus ulcers), burns, broken bones, fractures, unwarranted physical restraint, oversedation, and malnutrition and dehydration

You should be aware of the signs of nursing home abuse and, when warning signs are present, you should question the nursing home staff and contact attorney Joseph Klest immediately.

Nursing homes have a duty to protect their residents, many of whom are elderly, against abuse. There are many procedures and policies that they may implement to minimize or prevent abuse, including:

  • Appropriate staffing. One way to prevent nursing home abuse is to hire well-qualified staff members who have the appropriate background and training to care for nursing home residents.
  • Adequate training. Working in a nursing home can be an emotionally challenging occupation. By ensuring its personnel are trained to deal with difficult patients and difficult situations, a nursing home can reduce the likelihood of abuse.
  • Proper monitoring. A thorough policy to monitor staff and residents is another way to prevent nursing home abuse.

If you suspect a loved one has been the victim of nursing home abuse in the Chicago area, contact lawyer Joseph Klest for a free initial consultation. We represent people in Chicago, Schaumburg, and throughout the Chicagoland area.
