Dooring Accidents: 2016 Update

BikeGraphic

After a long wait, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has compiled and released the most recent data regarding dooring accidents. This data covers dooring accidents that occurred within the city of Chicago in 2014. We have summarized notable highlights of this report below.

While this update contains some good news as well as some bad news, the take-away from it remains the same as always - Chicago continues to improve as a bike-friendly city, but it's also very dangerous and you should be cautious at all times.

Accidents Down, Injuries Up

Overall, the number of dooring accidents in Chicago dropped from 269 in 2013 to 202 in 2014 (a 25 percent decrease!). Unfortunately, the number of serious injuries that resulted from these accidents rose by 63 percent.

This rise means that nearly 10 percent of all dooring accidents in Chicago led to serious, incapacitating injuries. Additionally, 80 percent of all dooring accidents resulted in an apparent or reported injury of any type (including the previously mentioned serious injuries). A year earlier, 70 percent of accidents met those same criteria; this highlights how likely any number of dooring accidents are to end with an injured bicyclist.

Milwaukee Ave., Our Own 'Hipster Highway'

With so much bike traffic on Milwaukee Avenue, it makes sense that the city has started to put more resources into making it safer for bicyclists. Although projects such as protecting the bike lane are still very much a work in progress, signs from the past few years are promising. Recently, dooring accidents on Milwaukee Ave. decreased by 44 percent year over year.

Despite this massive decrease, Milwaukee Avenue retains its title as the road with the most dooring accidents in Chicago, and bicyclists should exercise extra caution when on this road.

Some Roads Get Safer; Others Get More Dangerous

Other than the drop in dooring accidents that has occurred on Milwaukee Avenue, the most noticeable year-over-year changes were:

Dooring Accidents Up

  • North Avenue (accidents more than doubled)
  • California (accidents up by 43 percent)

Based on these statistics, it is unsurprising that the intersection of California and North is one of the intersections most frequently seen in the statistics provided by IDOT.

Dooring Accidents Down

  • Damen (accidents decreased by 54 percent)
  • Halsted (accidents down 46 percent)
  • Lincoln (accidents decreased by 35 percent)
